However, trichomes play a vital role in the hemp products that we see on store shelves across the nation. Trichomes have a hand in everything from smokable hemp flower, to tinctures, to edibles, and beyond. To be absolutely frank, without Trichomes, the hemp industry could not exist. So, apart from being a fun word to say, what exactly are trichomes and what do they do?
An Important Part of Hemp Plant Anatomy
Trichomes are an important part of the hemp plant. According to research published in Frontiers in Plant Science, “These can include simple tasks, such as affecting leaf temperature and photosynthesis, or more complicated functions, such as pest-deterrence via their physical structures or production of compounds.”
During the flowering stage, trichomes appear white, often giving the bud (or flower) of the plant a frosty coating, almost as if someone dipped them in sugar. Some individuals even describe them as looking like diamonds.
There are three types of trichomes found within the hemp plant; capitate-sessile, capitate-stalked, and bulbous. While each type is classified based on its characteristics, they all are equally important to the growth of the hemp plant.
What do Trichomes do?
Trichomes are important, but what exactly do they do?
Even though there are three different types of trichomes, all three produce cannabinoids and terpenes. According to Boveda, cannabinoids and terpenes are produced in the trichome’s gland heads.
Terpenes are what give hemp strains their different flavorings and scents. Some of the more common terpenes include Pinene, Limonene, and Caryophyllene, The different terpene presences are part of what makes strains like Paradise OG, Bubba Kush, and Lemon Runtz so unique from one another.
On the other hand, cannabinoids produce many of the effects experienced by those who consume hemp. Among the more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant, some of the most well-known include CBD, CBG, Delta 8 THC, and THCA. Without trichomes, we would not have hemp products like topics, edibles, and tinctures.
