What is THC-A?

THC-A is one of the cannabinoids that is developed from CBGA. CBGA is commonly nicknamed the “Mother of all Cannabinoids”. According to Leafly, “THCA is not intoxicating if ingested. Chemically, it has an additional molecular carboxyl ring, which prevents it from binding to receptors in the brain responsible for feeling high.”

According to the results published by the National Library of Medicine, “Δ9 -THCA shows potent neuroprotective activity, which is worth considering for the treatment of Huntington’s disease and possibly other neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases.”

2020 research offered more insight into the properties of the THC-A cannabinoid. THC-A, in combination with several other cannabinoids, was found to have anti-nausea properties in male Sprague-Dawley rats. According to the findings of the study, the results were preliminary but offered new possibilities when dealing with chemotherapy-induced nausea.

Does THCA make people high?

In its natural state, THCA lacks psychoactive properties. Due to its molecular configuration, THCA is unable to engage with the brain receptors responsible for inducing a state of euphoria. However, this limitation is only observed when THCA is ingested in its raw form, such as through the juicing of freshly harvested cannabis.

THCA vs. THC

Delta-9 THC and THCA are two tetrahydrocannabinol compounds distinguished by a critical molecular variation: THCA features a carboxylic acid group attached to a benzene ring, whereas THC lacks this group. The presence of the extra ring grants THCA a three-dimensional configuration and a larger molecular structure that prevents it from binding to neural receptors, thus inhibiting the onset of psychoactive effects. Consequently, THCA typically exists in a crystalline solid state, while THC remains a liquid.

During the conversion process from THCA to THC, the additional group is shed, transforming THCA into the intoxicating compound familiar to consumers.
