What Exactly Is Delta 8 THC

Delta-8-THC, an analogue of delta-9-THC—the primary psychoactive component in cannabis—is recognized by the National Cancer Institute for its diverse therapeutic properties, including antiemetic, anxiolytic, and analgesic effects, among others. Unlike its counterpart, delta-8-THC boasts a lower psychotropic potency, offering a milder high.

While occurring naturally in cannabis in minute quantities, innovative extraction methods have enabled the concentration of delta-8-THC for commercial purposes. This has spurred the production of various Delta 8 products such as vapes, gummies, tinctures, and flower, catering to those seeking its unique benefits. However, it’s important for consumers to be mindful of the legal status of delta-8-THC in their area before indulging in such products.

How Is Delta 8 THC Made

The process of extracting cannabinoids from the hemp plant to create potent products with noticeable effects is challenging but achievable. Commercial extraction processors employ various methods such as selective breeding, distillation, and molecular isolation to increase the concentration of cannabinoids.

In 2004, Dr. Mechoulam patented a method (US Patent Number US20040143126A1) for converting common CBD derived from hemp into Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC, known as isomerization. This method, described in the patent, yields higher purity and greater yields compared to previous techniques.

Additionally, some companies utilize “thin film distillation” on harvested CBD flower and trim. This process involves the use of vacuums, temperature control, and specialized equipment to convert the 0.3% Delta-9 THC to Delta-8, resulting in concentrated products.

Possible Benefits

Numerous preclinical and clinical studies, along with anecdotal reports, are shedding light on the distinctive therapeutic properties of delta-8-THC, a remarkable cannabinoid present in hemp. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that being a minor cannabinoid, there remains a substantial amount yet to be understood about its effects. Therefore, a cautious approach to its usage is warranted.

Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief Effects

A 2018 preclinical study published in “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research” found that delta-8-THC may help to diminish pain and inflammation in corneal injury in mice. The research found that when applied topically, assisted in pain reduction, and reduced inflammation through its effects on the CB1 receptors. Another preclinical study on rats also reported that the compound delivers pain relief, but that tolerance to the cannabinoid developed rapidly.

Potential Anxiety Relief

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, delta-8-THC displays anxiety-reducing qualities similar to delta-9-THC. While there is currently little clinical literature investigating its anti-anxiety potential, anecdotal reports claim that it’s consumption may results in a very calm, focused high, without the anxiety that can sometimes accompany delta-9-THC.

Relief From Nausea

The nausea fighting potential of delta-8-THC was reported in a 1995 study published in  “Life Sciences.” The study followed eight pediatric cancer patients over two years and found that no vomiting occurred when patients ingested delta-8-THC before and for 24 hours after cancer treatment. The study reported very few side effects.

May Help Stimulate The Appetite

Delta-8-THC may also help to stimulate the appetite. Research conducted on mice and published in a 2004 edition of “Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior” found that a low dose of this cannabinoid administered to mice over 50 days resulted in a 22% increase in food intake compared with controls. The research also reported that it increased food intake significantly more than delta-9-THC, which is a reputed appetite stimulant.
